An efficient and reliable national addressing system positively impacts our economic and social development, poverty alleviation programs, postal services, emergency services, national security, road safety, quality of life, housing, spatial development, transportation and tourism development among others.
The National Information Communication Technology Policy (January, 9 2012), recommended that the Federal Government should encourage and facilitate the development of Geographical Information System (GIS) which will support Government activities for urban and rural areas development, monitoring the state of the environment, planning sustainable environment usage, improve land and water management etc.
The Nigerian Postcode System and National Addressing System (NAS) are domiciled at the Nigerian Postal Service through the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology, and the database shall be made accessible for online citizen's services such as e-NYSC, e-Immigration (e-Passport), e-LGA etc.
As part of the implementation of NAS, NIPOST has adopted Digital addressing system (DAS). It is mandatory for all agencies, institutions (private and public) to adopt the service for the successful implementation of the NAS program. NIPOST DAS is an ultra-specific addressing system for Nigeria. The core technology of this system is a regionalised and customised version Google's opensource project called Open Location Code.
This has allowed the NIPOST to map and identify anywhere in Nigeria. Unlike GPS coordinates, NIPOST DAS represent an area, not a point. The system has a unique and identifiable coding system that enables an efficient postal distribution in Nigeria. NIPOST DAS's algorithm ensures that every claimed digital address is unique and mapped to an individual or business.
