HOW POSTAGE STAMPS ARE ISSUED |

In Nigeria, like other Postal Authorities, froduction of stamps is initiated by
the motive of issuing such stamps. This has brought about the theme or concept of
stamp issues. Stamp issues are divided into 2 catagories based on the concept: |

COMMEMORATIVE/SPECIAL ISSUES |
|
|
|
|
|
|
These are issued to: |
|
|
|
|
|
|
1. |
Mark events or occasions of national or international importance, but only when
such event has attained a certain age, e.g. 25th (Silver 50th (Golden), 60th (Diamond)
or lOOth (Centenary) |
|
|
|
|
|
|
2. |
In honour of personalities who must be celebrities or national figures of great
fame. COMMEMORATIVE/SPECIAL STAMPS: are issed from time to time, subject to a maximum
of six issues in one calendar year. |

|
DEFINITIVE ISSUES |
|
|
|
|
|
|
These are issued to reflect the country's social and economic development as well
as her cultural heritage. Definitive are issued once every five years.
